FAQ on bees
Why did the pest bees pick my house?
Bees will pick a location for no other reason but convenience. There is an available void that a scout bees has found or as the bees were swarming by late in the day chose to rest on or in. We have seen bees in barbeques, under wood piles, the sides of trucks, in shrubs that are 3' tall, there is no reason why the bees will pick one place over another that we can see. If you live near a wash or off the desert you stand a greater chance of getting bee swarms at your home or business. But we treat lots of homes in downtown Phoenix for bees as well. How do I know if there is honey comb in my walls or ceiling? It does not take long for bees to build a wax comb, and they start almost immediately after moving into a void or hollow space. The honey that bees product takes a while since the bees need to gather large amounts of pollen and then that has to basically ferment in the cells before becoming honey. If the bees have been living in your walls at your home or business for a month or more there is a good chance that you have honey in your walls, how much is dependent on how big of a swarm moved in to begin with. If the bees have been there for 2 or 3 months you could have a significant amount of honey in the walls that could cause problems for you later on. Remember most of the time when you find a hive or swarm on your property and its not in a location you look at every day the bees most likely have been there much longer than you think.

Honey bees use nectar and pollen from flowers as food. Honey bees will visit swimming pools, fountains, pet dishes or even livestock watering troths to drink water and also to gather water to take back to the hive. Bees will nest in a wide variety of locations, such as animal burrows, overturned flower pots, cavities in saguaros, trees or rocks, irrigation valve boxes, drainage tiles, discarded automobile parts, old appliances, and yes in walls of homes.
Bee can enter openings as small as 3/16-inch in diameter as long as there is a suitable-sized cavity for building a comb behind or inside the opening.
